New Shoes

"Even though he was nearly nine years old, it was the first pair of shoes he had ever owned."

We were given six lines of text and had to come up with an illustration based on one them. This is mine! I avoided a wheelchair because it didn't fit for me, and someone in my class suggested to add another crutch but I decided against it because having only one adds to the misfortune of the situation (and having crutches wouldn't help you if you had no legs -_-).

Anyway, I had a few people say it made them sad but the concept makes me smile. I saw Achmat Hassiem on Animal Planet's I'm Alive a week or so after I finished this and I was so excited to hear someone who lost his legs talk about how happy he was to get prosthetic legs, and even happier because the ones he got looked so awesome. I'm a little envious of people who have near-death experiences or contract HIV and now have such a huge respect for life. It must be amazing to be excited about simply being alive.
